Bemused by off-target potshots at @Emma_A_Webb for this. The IOC has a rule prohibiting political gestures. They have decided taking the knee comes within that rule, on the arguable but not-unreasonable ground that it is a political gesture. https://twitter.com/talkRADIO/status/1385242194370514944
The clever take is that Emma is a hypocrite because, as an FSU employee, she should be a free speech fundamentalist & shouldn't advance nuanced qualifications to free speech. This is horse shit. Have a word with yourselves.
Free speech principles don't prohibit house rules on relevance or propriety, such as rule 50. You can't peddle Tory policies at a Labour party conference. You can't promote commercial products on BBC programmes. And you can't turn a sporting event into a political event.
If Emma had argued there should be a rule specifically banning taking the knee, but allowing other gestures, her critics would have a point. But guys, she didn't say that. Find someone who did, & dunk on them.
