Going to do some basic vaccine math here (& mask education) while you wait for your COVID-19 vaccine’s 1st & 2nd doses.
I’ll use my husband as an example.
He’s a 41 year old teacher here in Saskatchewan.

Currently, based on his age, he doesn’t qualify to book in for any COVID-19 vaccines yet.
Today is April 22nd.
It was announced that his age category (& possibly occupation category) will be eligible to “book a vaccine” starting on April 28th.

I say “book” because that doesn’t mean he can “get” his vaccine next week.
Currently we don’t have enough vaccine to keep up with demand.
Yes, we get vaccine allotments each week, but there is most definitely not extra.

Most drive thrus ran out of vaccine earlier this wk, so the only options are booking an appt.
April appts could already be booked up. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try to keep booking, but it just means that it could be a week or 2 before you actually get “your shot”.

So.
My husband can call next week, on April 28, & he may get an appointment in a week or two.
That gets him to getting his COVID-19 vaccine on May 5th or May 12?
Then, it takes 2 (more like 3) weeks to build up protection from COVID-19.
That takes him to May 26 or June 2?

That takes him to May 26 or June 2??
Why is this important?
It is important because it won’t be until the school year is almost over that he will be “short term” protected from COVID-19.
Remember, he is a teacher.
& What’s short term?
Well, he still needs his 2nd dose.

So what’s my point?
Hold tight. Keep up with all public health precautions.

Please do not make the mistake of rushing to gather with people before your body has had the chance to build immunity against COVID-19 properly.

Even if you get your vaccine, you still have to take all measures (masking, distancing, etc) to protect yourself for a number of wks, preferably until you get that 2nd dose (& that is going to take time).
Say what?
Yeah, vaccines aren’t instant superpowers.

Why again?
Simplistically, 1st doses prime your immune system. You get some protection for a short time.
Because after that 1st shot you start building antibodies, but they don’t last.
So.
You need that 2nd dose to make that protection stay for a longer time.
