BREAKING: The House passed a bill to admit Washington, DC as the 51st state. It still needs a Senate vote.

DC's population of 705,000+ is about 60% POC and larger than that of 2 states, but it has no voting representation in Congress.
The House passed a bill for #DCStatehood.

What that means and what happens next:
▪️ DC would get 1 House rep, 2 senators
▪️ White House, Capitol, National Mall would remain a federal district
▪️ In the Senate, the bill needs support of 60 senators due to filibuster
Over 4 million Americans do not have equal voting rights to people in the 50 states.

Americans in Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and other overseas territories are denied equal voting representation in Congress — and unlike DC, they can't vote in presidential elections.
