I just published ‘One Step In, One Step Removed’: An Ode To Status Literacy https://link.medium.com/AidhiIxjFfb
I lean heavily on @tressiemcphd's incredibly accessible analysis of status in her recent interview with @ezraklein. But really this is me waking up (again) to why Tressie's work is often "telling my whole life with [her] words." Here's that podcast: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/13/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-tressie-mcmillan-cottom.html?smid=url-share
It feels like forever since I was able to write like this, making connections between text, experience and more text. I've missed doing that. It's not surprising that Tressie's ideas spark so many of my own. I'm grateful to get a little of that old feeling back.
Although I couldn't quite weave Charles Derber's work on attention and power into the essay, his book was my first encounter with popular sociology that helped me see that I might want to go read more. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/273223.The_Pursuit_of_Attention
Also, shout out to @tiffanymjewell whose wonderful primer for young folks, This Book Is Anti-Racist, helped me find more words to describe my experience in parsing my social identities and their relationship to dominant culture. https://bookshop.org/books/this-book-is-anti-racist-20-lessons-on-how-to-wake-up-take-action-and-do-the-work/9780711245211?aid=9571
Anyway, yay, me!
I finally wrote an essay and it's also a revival of #IdentityEducationPower which is 5 years old but sort of went to sleep in between. Please check it out if you're not familiar. https://medium.com/identity-education-and-power
