We are definitely due for a creative renaissance on Broadway. We need more weird, experimental, minimalist shit. We need to revive only to deconstruct and recontextualize. We need more dark, more CAMP, more risks. My kingdom for a 70’s style concept musical!
An adjustment feels nigh though. Hadestown & the Oklahoma! revival we’re getting us back there, so let’s go all the way. This ousting of R*din feels like the perfect moment for it.
I really hope we get more Broadway transfers of original regional works. We need more voices outside the Broadway/West End bubbles to permeate the mainstream.
Also REVIVE THE SECRET GARDEN YOU COWARDS. Can you IMAGINE what they could do with modern lighting techniques and some unconventional casting? How has that show never had a Broadway revival?
But for real, 90% of these movie title musicals exist so that the creatives can make the real money in licensing their show out. I've directed so many junior versions of these crappy shows simply because the kids know the titles & they're simple enough for kiddos.
It's so you can see your kids do a show with a plot you already kinda know. That way you can tune out, pay attention when your kid is onstage, and still know what's going on. 😜
Anyway, never ever ever forget that Broadway is a business. Sometimes good art makes its way there, sure, but that's not why it really exists. The business element has been there since Ziegfeld and the Shuberts.
