Reports of O2 tankers not being permitted to go to the hospitals in the national capital bc the state govts are made up of opposing political parties. There have been reports of testing centres being given orders to reduce or stop testing so that “official” numbers of positive cases remain low. The reported # of deaths is low but the overnight construction of new crematoriums and the hundreds of pyres burning on the streets
reveal the truth. Our already inadequate healthcare system has quickly reached breaking point, and the suppression of data only serves to further fuel distrust in the government.

A couple of days ago the govt announced that people 18-45 could register to get the available vaccines, but the differential pricing between the centre and the states has further politicised the issue. What will we do?
We’re a largely young and poor country so the majority that needs to be vaccinated won’t be able to access or afford the vaccines. The profiteering by the two Indian companies and the refusal of the govt to throw funds behind urgent vaccination drives will be disastrous.
The longer the current situation persists, the higher the danger of newer, deadlier and possibly vaccine resistant variants developing. India broke the record for the single day highest # of new cases, but we will undoubtedly break all the records in the following weeks.
Tens of thousands are dying around the country already so how many Indians will we lose in three weeks’ time when current infections from people flocking to hospitals reveal themselves? What will we do then?
Most western countries started vaccinating in Dec20/Jan21 and refused the mass production of vaccines to protect corporate interests. In India, the vaccination drive w the locally developed vaccine was launched mid-Jan, but how many could have been vaccinated in 3 months
if Western countries had valued human life over profit? We would undoubtedly not be seeing the current scale of fatalities if we had been able to vaccinate at the scale required in these past 3 months. The West and its govts have the blood of 1000s of Indians on their hands.
The pandemic started over a year ago and the Indian govt had a head start in preparing our healthcare and social welfare systems for a second wave. Billions were collected as part of the PMCares Fund, & yet we are not seeing unimaginable numbers of deaths. They too are to blame.
The sickest truth is that COVID and its proliferation in India is almost entirely because of rich Indians returning from abroad and refusing to follow containment protocols. And the cooks, cleaners, drivers, gardeners got sick as a result.
The aam aadmi, the millions of working class Indians who didn’t fly on the international flights, have no space to social distance, cannot afford to live through a lockdown, and cannot afford to buy treatment or the vaccine once again bearing the brunt. #COVIDEmergency2021
