Happy Earth Day! To celebrate I am going to share some of my fave lifestyle habits/tips because sustainability is important to me (and the earth!) (1/15)
Solar Power! I love my @biolitestove solar power so much. It’s affordable, portable & gets the job done. My bathroom & bedroom are exclusively lit using solar, and partially used in my living space. I have BioLite’s SolarHome 620 & SunLight 100: https://ca.biolitenergy.com  (2/15)
Bulk Refills. I buy detergents, shampoo, liquid soap & cleaning spray in bulk with my own containers (or in returnable jars) to minimize packaging. I love the citrus in-house brand at http://ecoandamour.com  but explore and find the products and stores that work for you! (3/15)
Reef-safe sunscreen. You don’t have to choose between your sun safety and the oceans! Basically, try to avoid sunscreens with coral-damaging chemicals like oxybenzone or octinoxate- which is in a lot of major brands. Right now, I use Think Sport. (4/15)
Donate old phones. Coltan is a metallic ore used in almost all cellphones & is mined heavily in the Congo rainforests, where Lowland Gorillas live. By recycling your phone, the minerals can be re-used to reduce mining demand. Check out https://www.torontozoo.com/tz/phoneapes  for more info (5/15)
Rags & Handkerchiefs. Reduce your waste (and save money!) by using cloth rags & handkerchiefs instead of paper towels or tissues. Mine are old tees and leggings so I’m reducing usage of disposable paper products AND keeping textiles from ending up in the landfill. Win-win. (6/15)
Packaging. Look for products that reduce plastic waste with their packages. Some examples I use: @native_cos deodorant is in cardboard, I can order food staples in returnable jars with @freshcityfarms and @NaturollyGood bamboo toilet paper is packaged with no plastic. (7/15)
Recycle responsibly. Sometimes you just can't reduce, reuse or curbside recycle the stuff you consume. There are still options! One example: @TerraCycle recycles traditionally non-recyclable items (like baby bel and eos!) More info here: https://www.terracycle.com/en-CA/brigades  (8/15)
Support a circular economy. Sell/donate old items, and buy/swap second-hand to reduce damage from production processes and to keep existing products from the landfill. These are just some of the items traded for through @bunzofficial. It’s both eco & financially friendly! (9/15)
When you need something new, ask yourself: Do I already own this/do I need it? > If it’s broken, can it be fixed? > Can I re-purpose something else I own? > Can I borrow it? > Can I find it second-hand? > Where can I purchase it responsibly? (10/15)
Also, do the same when you want to get rid of something so it doesn't end up in a landfill: Can I sell or give (or swap) it to someone who wants and will use it? Can I repurpose or upcycle it? Can I donate it somewhere helpful? Can I recycle it responsibly? (11/15)
Calculate your carbon footprint- and offset it. In the before-times, I offset every flight I took. Now, I use carbon footprint calculators both to donate $ to offset my footprint AND to be more aware of my personal areas of improvement. (12/15)
Be an advocate. Let organizations know when you are pleased or disappointed with their packaging, their products, and their values. Both complaints and compliments are important! Ditto for the government. (13/15)
We are all at different points on our environmental journey, and that is okay! Do what you can, when you can. There are so many resources and learning materials and vlogs to inspire and help, and I am ALWAYS thrilled to chat about all things eco! (14/15)
I am going to end this thread with a quote from @Shelbizleee, my favourite online creator for eco-content: “You can not do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good that you can do.” (15/15) #EarthDay
