A plea to academics during periods of remote learning.

Learning as a neuro diverse student has its challenges.

We often hear: ‘You have plenty of time before the next session so read this and have a break. It’s ok that we are overrunning.

But really

It may take us longer to read, organise and process our thoughts. On regular occasions there are times when students don't have time to finish the reading or task , let alone step away from the screen for a break or lunch (in a timetabled gap).

because doing so may leave them at a disadvantage in the next session. We all spend so much time on screen these days and often that is seen as an expectation to ‘keep up’, but really remote learning is even more draining than in person teaching.
