I am very sad that George Christensen will not stand at the next election. George is loved in North Queensland because he is a man of his convictions. He has been a warrior and an achiever. [1/8]
George has fearlessly defended farmers, miners and tourist operators with great effect. He has fearlessly defended the rights of the unborn. [2/8]
George can take great pride in the 2000+ North Queenslanders now employed at the Adani Carmichael mine, that he helped get started. We would not have a Sugar Code without him. And, he has delivered nation building infrastructure, including the Mackay Ring Road. [3/8]
George has been the best Minister this Liberal-National Government never had. He sacrificed potential promotions to stand true to his belief and values. George has such a big following because he has been willing to put himself on the line for others. [4/8]
George's convictions don't just come from the heart. He is one of the most well read and intellectual MPs. He is a massive loss to the fabric of the LNP, the Nationals party and to the Parliament. [5/8]
But George's success came more from hard work. George would fight for 3 or 4 issues every week in Parliament - from tourism assistance to the threat of the CCP. I am sure he will continue to make contributions to conservative causes, just on a different battlefield. [6/8]
George will be missed in North Queensland. He is as NQ as sugar cane, coral and the Cowboys. It is people like George that make Queensland great. [7/8]
I am saddened by his decision but completely understand and relate to it. Being an MP is a great honour but it pales in comparison to the importance of being a father and a husband. I wish George, April and Margaret all the best in the future. [8/8]
