Today's topic is Greek and Roman history https://twitter.com/MichaelBaiden20/status/1385134763569201154
There was a Trojan war but there wasn't a Trojan horse
The library of Alexandria didn't fall to a great fire, there was a fire but it didn't destroy the library and it was still around centuries after the fire. It probably fell to poor maintenance and a series of disasters
This won't come as a shocker to literally anyone who knows how societies work lmao but Sparta wasn't a warrior society lol. They focused on their military more than most Greek states who were into poetry and philosophy but obviously they weren't all badass warriors
Actually speaking of Sparta...they didn't fight much lol. Their reputation as fierce warriors who were scared of nothing was enough to keep most invaders away
Okay going off topic but medieval warfare had few casualties lol. Some wars were literally only fought with money and whoever raised a larger army won
Okay now Rome
Romans never persecuted Christians on a large scale like pop culture depicts, some local lords who disliked Christianity did but most Romans didn't care about Christians or just looked down on them because to the Romans it was just some weird cult.
The only event close to the pop culture persecution is after the great fires of Rome when Emperor Nero needed a scapegoat to blame he blamed Christians (some sources state that Nero started the fires but it's probably not accurate)
Nero didn't even hate Christians in particular, he just needed to escape accountability and blaming that weird rapidly growing cult was easy. But this event made him the most hated man in Christianity lol
Also the biblical beast is probably Nero. The number of his name is 666. They probably used the beast as a code because Nero hated being criticized
Cleopatra wasn't racially an Egyptian, she was Greek, maybe with a bit of Persian ancestry
Also she wasn't really described as beautiful by most first hand accounts, her knowledge and elegance speech made her seductive...according to Marc Antony
And he joined her and betrayed Caesar so she must have been doing something right
Gladiators didn't fight to the death. They were the ancient equivalent of sportsmen. They even got paid to promote certain brands and stuff
Also their sweat was sold in vials outside the stadium lmao
Roman weren't always wearing togas, it was for special events
Caesar never said, "Et tu Brutus?"...or maybe he did, we'd never know but given how humans in the real world act I doubt a man getting stabbed by all the senators would say anything at all
Oh and Rome's marble infrastructure had color. They just faded away over time and now look white
Rome didn't copy the Greek gods they had their own gods, but as they started becoming obsessed with Greek culture they started drawing parallels between their gods and Greek gods. It's basically the equivalent of comparing Sango to Thor because they both had power over lightning
Okay I'm done
