Y’all. I never thought I would share this story but I must. Because I don’t think y’all realize how fcking deranged some fans are.

I’m gonna tell you about the time I met a sasaeng. This is a real story. I don’t have proof cuz it was a conversation.

Believe me or don’t.
I will just tell you that it was not a sasaeng of the 875, but two other Korean groups under the same company, both groups debuted before 875, but not too long before.

I was in Asia at the time, I’m not going to specify where cuz it doesn’t matter but if you know me, you know.
So I’m an expat living in Asia and going to school and I was trying to make friends with people, which was actually pretty easy considering most everyone else was an expat and wanted to be friends too, even if we could only communicate brokenly in the language we were learning.
Still, it was hard to make friends because we could only go so deep so during my first few months living there, I would get a bit excited whenever someone spoke English. It wasn’t an expectation, more like a grateful surprise cuz I just wanted friends.
So I met this woman in class who was around my age and to my surprise, she runs up to me cuz I am from the US and starts talking to me in English and I was surprised and excited cuz I didn’t know she spoke English and she invited me to have lunch with her and so I was like “yes!”
And everything is super chill and normal and we’re chatting and I am drinking coffee and I get this notification on my phone from my bestie in the states and she’s a multi and she was like “did you hear about Hyuna and E-Dawn?” Cuz this is when their dating thing hit.
I was like “whaaaat!” Out loud and the woman was like “what” and I just on a whim was like “my best friend just text me...it’s like...a kpop thing.”

And the woman’s eyes change and she’s like “you like K-pop?” And I was like trying to be friendly so I was like “some!”
“But I really like BTS, do you know them?” And she was like not very interested, she was like “well, they are good but they aren’t as popular as * and * I think” and this was 2018 btw and they definitely were but that was besides the point. So hey, I was lonely and was like
“Oh, are those your favorite groups?” And she said “yes! I love them! I buy all their albums and merch” like basically all normal fan stuff and I was like in my mind just thinking “okay we can find some common ground as dedicated fans” so the convo continued normally until+
I decided to ask her input on the whole E-Dawn and Hyuna thing. Now mind you, Pentagon was not one of the two groups she was into, but boy howdy did she have a lot to say.

And what she said made my blood run cold.
“I don’t think it’s right that he should date anyone, he belongs to the fans. We give him money, we give him fans, we give him love, and for him to date someone is a betrayal of that. He owes his fans to stay single and so does she. He belongs to his fans.”
By this point, the hairs on my arms were like...standing up. That’s so creepy, right? So I tried to make sure it wasn’t like a language misunderstanding and I tried to clarify and asked

“You don’t mean fans own idols right?”

“We do own idols. We pay for them. We employ them.”
And she went on to describe her own opinion on idols and their privacy

I swear to you, what I am about to tell you is the honest to fck truth and I wanted to forget about it because it was creepy. It was so fcking creepy.
She basically said that idols do not have a right to privacy, that the fans pay for their phone so the fans should have access to their number, that the fans pay for their house, so they should have access to their address, that the fans pay for their food so they should+
be able to come up to them in public. That the idols are selling themselves as a perfect boyfriend or girlfriend so they do not have a right to and she literally said “cheat and betray their relationship with their fans”
and that an idol is given money and fame and all the fans ask in return is their time and their sincerity and their loyalty.

I was...in a state of shock? I guess would be the best way to put it.

I just said “but these idols are still humans, they should still be treated+
as other humans” or something to that effect, like I remember asking her if she would be okay with her boss showing up at her house since her boss paid her bills but she said it wasn’t the same.

I just.,,can’t get over what she said.
“They aren’t human, they are above human.”
As if it was a compliment. But it was actually dehumanizing cuz her entire point was that since they have marketed themselves as above the average human, that they lost the rights of being treated like a human.
I am excessively polite and awkward irl, so I waited in stunned silence for about 15 minutes and finished my coffee before saying “I need to go” and excused myself and never spoke to her again.

She ended up getting transferred to another school for stalking a Korean student.
I can’t believe I forgot this part but back to the edawn and Hyuna thing she said something along the lines of that they should listen to their fans cuz their fans would take care of them if they did what they (the fans) wanted and broke up. If not, they wouldn’t have a career.
Tbh I don’t think most fans of Hyuna or Edawn wanted them to break up. So this is not a reflection on their fans.

Anyway. Yeah she was creepy and there is so much more but not my stories to tell. I still get sick thinking about it.
