Nearly identical numbers profiles for these two catchers. Catcher A is battling a hamstring injury and is usually in the upper percentile for sprint speed.
Jorge Alfaro is 3 years younger than Salvador Perez but this could be a realistic comp for his game as he gets older. They both hit the ball really hard to compensates for their poor plate discipline and Jorge is a much better athlete and defender when healthy.
The thing that separates the two is their swing as Alfaro doesn’t get enough lift on his swing to really use his power. His launch angle average is 5.4 degrees compared to Perez’s 11 degrees this season (lowest of his career).
Jorge has an xBA of .280 and xSLG of .467 so far this season. Maybe he can work on his swing while he’s rehabbing but most likely it’s something he’ll need to do in offseason. I wonder how Rowson is teaching hitting if he’s incorporating this information
For a guy who hits the ball as hard as Jorge hitting at an angle between 10-20 degrees would be ideal for extra bases
This isn’t a player A is secretly as good as player B tweet. I’m just wondering how player could unlock a part of his game and be as productive as player B with a similar-ish batting profile. So far all I’ve got is the launch angle.
If he could double his average launch angle on the season he’d have more of these hits for the marlins.
