Their vote wasn't silent - they told their friends, family, everybody who'd listen that they're voting for Modi and BJP because he'd change the country and now it's just hard to walk from all that. Admitting modi is terrible means admitting they made a mistake, a judgement call.

I think the magnitude of the issue is directly proportional to the support, sadly. Bigger the screw up, louder the cover up and justification.

They aren't defending BJP as much as they are defending their own mistake, their trust in one man and one party, and their complete and utter let down.
