In the myth, Satan’s sin was following his own inclination instead of that of God. His sin was not being evil. It was making a choice. He put his own wants before that of God, he disobeying God, and encouraging God’s children Adam and Eve to do the same.

Conservatives see knowledge as evil. Knowledge belongs to authority. The authority will give you the knowledge he wants you to have. All knowledge comes from above to below and the right to make choices and decisions only belongs to authority.

Adam and Eve were offered knowledge. It gave them self-awareness, which gave them wants and desires. Which led to disobedience. Conservatives want to return to the bliss of unself-consciousness, like that of a child. Eternal childhood, eternal trust and belief, eternal security.

This is also why you can’t give political power to religious authority. Their followers follow and obey. To reject political authority is to reject religious authority, which is unthinkable.
