A pictodiary, an insight into MIQ in Niue 🇳🇺
Since COVID19, Air NZ flies commercial Auckland - Niue - Auckland once every 2 weeks with a maximum of 30 pax as per Niue Government travel restrictions. Prior Govt approval is required before boarding/entry is granted.
Upon arrival Niue’s Chief of Police (Head of Security) boards the aircraft & welcomes everyone home. Pax are briefed in Vagahau & English, given instructions on airport process and transport procedures to MIQ facilities & home isolation for some.
Before disembarking, passengers’ gloves & masks used during the flight are collected & disposed of. Everyone’s hands are sanitised, new masks and gloves are distributed before they’re let off the aircraft - these must be worn until reaching MIQ accommodation 😷🧤✈️
Upon entering terminal, pax are screened by medical staff before proceeding to Customs & Immigration. Social distancing is maintained. Quick wave through the glass to our families on the other side departing on the return flight to Auckland 🙋🏽
Prior to departing Auckland pax are informed to label their luggage- what’s to be collected by your loved ones in Niue outside airport & what’s going with you to MIQ. These cannot mix. Upon arrival in Niue pax have no access to their luggage until they reach MIQ accommodation.
Pax are lead to vans and driven to MIQ by Police / Security Officers.
Our driver here is my mate Semi and yes, I sat in the front 😷✌🏽😂
We’re briefed again on arrival at MIQ & allocated our rooms. Luggage is delivered and gates are shut. Once closed, no one or nothing is allowed out until the completion of 14 days.
Great thing is families are able to prepare your MIQ room before you arrive. Our fam prep’d & stocked our room w food, drinks, welcome banner, kahoa maile & all the necessities of home 🌿🥰
🇳🇺MIQ DAY 1
Nothing says welcome home like some mean kai 👌🏽
Visiting hours are from 7am - 7pm, where families could come by for a chat or drop off food / supplies. Separated by 2 fences to ensure there is no direct contact. Visits are supervised by security officers who work 24/7. Security cameras also ensure compliance.
🇳🇺MIQ DAY 2
More kai from the fam & the lovely Aunty in Apartment 1 gave me some flowers cos I helped set up her wifi; some kind of sweet smelling gardenia she picked from her mother’s garden in Auckland 💫
🇳🇺MIQ DAY 3
Health checks (vitals) by medical staff & mingling with the other Quarantinos’
🇳🇺MIQ DAY 3
My Dad spends most of his day & night studying, even when we were in NZ & now here still. We learnt that the exam he sat in Auckland he scored 22/25 🙌🏽 So in the mornings when he sleeps in a little later than usual, we just let him. Lord knows he deserves his rest.
Going on 1am - my Aunt & Dad still at it. They had study sessions in NZ, did their exam together at AUT & now still going cos they’ve got a group presentation tomorrow. One of the reasons we decided on MIQ so they’d continue studying together & not isolating separately at home.
🇳🇺 MIQ DAY 4
WE ARE SO SPOILT!🥺 Families and friends keep dropping off food all day long & when anyone in here receives food, we all share with each other. The island community spirit is strong✊🏽💕 #BlessedAndGrateful
🇳🇺 MIQ DAY 4
Basket weaving in the moonlight 🌙 This is my friend Mara. She’s an old classmate who’s just returned home for their family’s ear piercing / haircutting in a couple weeks. Showing off she’s still got her weaving skills we learnt as kids (I don’t remember🤦🏽‍♂️😂)
🇳🇺MIQ DAY 5
Coconut breakfast - niu, nane & falaoa niu 🌴
🇳🇺MIQ DAY 5
Frolics on the reef. Our MIQ facility is the Matavai Apartments at Homofiti in Tamakautoga, located on the west coast. It sits on a clifftop with easy access to the reef and sea which we’re free to enjoy at one’s own leisure. Bechdemer in abundance
🇳🇺 MIQ DAY 5
Preps for ANZAC Day tomorrow. Yes even on the inside - with very little resources but big hearts - we plan on commemorating our fallen heroes. Setup & wreath making in full swing, all hands on deck

So we’ve run out of storage space. Been here less than a week, we haven’t bought a single item but there’s so much food we could feed the country. 5 visits / drop offs by family & friends so far today🥰
WHOOPS! Today’s actually 🇳🇺MIQ DAY 7 🤦🏽‍♂️😂 #fired

At that point where every time the security guard comes knocking at my door, my heart drops a little cos I know more family have just dropped by to bring more food. Can be quite overwhelming, but so grateful. Ai oti tau fakaue 🙏🏽💜
