1... I moved to Dallas to work in tech, I’ve always wanted to be in tech sales. I was thrilled to be recruited by a startup company with a promising product. Turns out very few reps were hitting quota and I wasn’t going to be able to survive on the commissions I was making.
2... So after 3 months I was then recruited by an Oil and Gas company to be a Landman... through inside sales. Great Comp. My own office (with a door that closed, I thought that was a flex) in a high rise in downtown Dallas. 150 B2C calls a day
3. I was fired in 9 weeks. 3 people were fired in that 9 weeks I worked there. So here I am. Brand new city, wife, kids, super expensive rent. Unemployed. I get an interview with another tech company
4. Multiple interviews. Everything is going incredibly well. They fly me to Florida for the final interview. I kill it. When I get back. They call me to tell me that “while I was impressive and they appreciated the time” they won’t be moving forward with me
5. Ok. I know telecom. I get a job with a telecom company doing the exact same thing I did in Wichita. Everything is fine for a couple of months. I’m then moved to a brand new “experimental” sales team. No one makes a sale for 6 months.
6. I’m scraping by, we’re on food stamps at this point. While I’m on LinkedIn I see a girl I used to work with at the first startup. She’s at a much larger tech company and talking about how much she loves her job. I hit her up.
7. She says, there’s actually an opening. You should go for it. I love it here. I hound the recruiter with my resume and info. They pass it along and want to set up an interview. 3 rounds. I swear it out. Learn the material and head into the last interview.
8. The interviewer says “looks like you’ve bounced around a lot since you’ve been in Texas... but we love your attitude and experience. We want to make you an offer. The offer is more than I’ve ever made by close to double
9. Last month I celebrated my year with that company with a significant raise and a brand new territory. I got the job I originally moved here for and more.
10. I say all of that to say, stay faithful, hopeful and positive, and take risks. Shit might actually work out. 🤞🏾
11. Also. The only thing special about me is that I have an amazing support system on friends and family and I didn’t give up.
