My students are geniuses! One of them emailed to ask about the Jain view on vaccines and I got to go digging for the answer.
From the World Health Organization on Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism "Recognize the need to sustain human life, with “regretful acceptance” of cooking food, boiling water, using antibiotics and vaccines." (page 37)  https://www.euro.who.int/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/315761/Vocal-vaccine-deniers-guidance-document.pdf
Jains follow a path of non-violence toward all living beings including microscopic organisms. Jains do allow cooking, the use of soap and antibiotics, and vaccination, because this destruction of microorganisms, even though regretted, is necessary to protect other lives.
And as a friend pointed out, “well, they definitely wear masks.”
