There’s an ice cream venue in Rosemount Aberdeen who are making... 30 people, yes you read that right, each do 5 hours of unpaid trial shifts with the hope of getting a job. Trial shift or free labour?

That’s not even the worst part...
A number of the exploited people who’ve done the 5 hour unpaid trial shift are being ‘invited’ to do a second trial shift between the shortlist of the 30 ‘applicants’, you know just to double exploit... I mean double check they’re hireable to serve ice cream.
Unpaid trial shifts are used by organisations as a way of getting free labour instead of filling a position and paying workers what they’re owed. It happens all the time and is VERY common in the hospitality sector. It needs to stop.
Unpaid trial shifts aren’t only making workers work for free, it’s actually costing them money in regard to travel expenses and in many cases, having to buy suitable clothing with often little chance of getting a job. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54345082

Im delighted the business in question have said they will now pay trialists for their time in future. Credit where credit is due, I wish no local business any harm. Treating workers with respect is vital to a successful economy.
