Today we ceremonially signed a set of bills that highlights some of the great work being done by our Legislature, our law enforcement, & our community activists.

We didn’t intend for this event to coincide with the George Floyd verdict, but we think it’s fortuitous that it did.
One of the most troubling things in our country is this false choice that we have to either support law enforcement or support multicultural communities that have been impacted by the awful acts of police.

We say this unequivocally: You can be both pro-police and anti-murder.
We're grateful that justice prevailed.

We're grateful for Utah’s law enforcement community that works diligently to find ways to improve, and we're grateful for our community activists who are advocating for what they know is right.
We ceremonially signed 12 bills today that were sponsored and passed by both Republicans and Democrats.

Law enforcement and community partners came together to find a better way.

Here's a look at some of today's highlights:
H.B. 162 requires that peace officer training include at least 16 hours of mental health, arrest control and de-escalation training.

Learning these skills can mean the difference between life and death. Such training only strengthens officers' ability to respond appropriately.
When officers screw up, they should be held accountable.

S.B. 13 requires law enforcement agencies to investigate wrongdoing. This kind of transparency will help build trust with the public.
H.B. 67 aids courts when deciding whether a defendant’s sentence should be served concurrently or consecutively when dealing with juvenile cases moving to adult courts.

We want to extend special thanks to Officer Cody Brotherson’s family for their help with this bill.
We want to strengthen trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. This set of bills will help maintain the safety of both Utah’s officers and the public.

Thank you to Major Scott Stephenson and POST for hosting us.
