Controlling Your Emotions

1. Rewind

Take a step or two backwards.

Ask “how did I get here?” Find the triggers that inspired your feelings.

Understanding where our emotions come from is crucial for managing them. Find the source of that feeling.
2. Take A Pause

We can get caught up in the moment. Slow down.

1. Counting - this can be effective for gaining control when you seem out of time. Slowing down your thoughts.

2. Breathing - I practice this daily. Focus on your breathing. Deep breathes. Slow your heart rate.
3. Shift your focus.

We like to hone in on something even if it’s not benefiting us emotionally.

Ex:
That guy or gal at the gym might be “more in shape” but shift focus to your fellow gym rats and that perspective changes.

Constantly comparing yourself to others is taxing.
4. Change Your Response

If nothing works & that emotion is coming out hot. Check your breathing and even close your eyes to calm down.

If you can’t stop laughing when someone is serious, force yourself to change your expression to be considerate.
5. Meditate -

This one is VITAL. Meditation helps me find peace and balance on my toughest days.

Don’t sit criss cross if it’s not comfortable. Find your comfort zone here.

Breathe naturally! It’s normal to experience negative emotions starting out.
Meditate (cont.) -

Most people will be uncomfortable starting out due to negative thoughts. (Anxiety, Irritation, Depression)
Don’t fight these thoughts off. Process them & allow them to come & go.

Your mind starts recognizing them but won’t get caught up in them.
7. Your mental state effects so much of your life & decision making.

Learning the ability to gain control over emotions is a huge skill for moving forward & up in whatever you do in life.

Take care of your mind and it will take care of you.
