We're deep into this 3rd wave and every journalist I've chatted with is feeling it.
It's an emotional time. Yet in JSchool, we were taught emotion is not being impartial and we need to be emotionless during interviews ... (1/3)
That's just wrong.
Suppressing your feelings only makes them worse. Feel the feels, acknowledge them and work through them.
1st time I cried during an interview, I felt ashamed.
Last night, a woman thanked me for shedding tears with her as she cried about her late husband. (2/3)
Every journalist is unique, and some can talk about heavy things with a straight face.
I don't and that's okay. I feel with you, I appreciate you, and will continue to sit and empathize in each interview.
Please stop shaming journalists for feeling emotions. (3/3)
