Dan White was a homophobe & SFPD cop who later became supervisor on a platform citing an "exodus from San Francisco" due to a "deteriorating social structure." After resigning he broke into City Hall & murdered the first gay supervisor and the mayor. He served 5 years in prison.
Tucker wasn't alone in celebrating Dan White though, SFPD officers wore "Free Dan White" t-shirts under their uniforms after the murders.
btw this is the statement he gave the police union when they endorsed him for supervisor
Not often mentioned: the day of the murders, Moscone was set to mediate a trial that would have forced SFPD to racially integrate its force. Moscone & Milk wanted to settle the case out-of-court. With White having resigned, they would have had the BoS votes needed to do so.
The POA published a...sort of...tribute to Harvey Milk in their journal. "It is no secret that he spent less and less time in his Camera Shop in order to spend more and more time on the affairs of City government. He will be missed."
cannot imagine having lived through this time. just a few years earlier the SFPD had illegally gone on strike and started getting wasted and shooting at streetlights. the strike culminated in a bomb detonating at mayor Alioto’s house. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_San_Francisco_Police_Department
the assassinations were also around the same time as the Jonestown massacre, which originated in SF - many victims were Black San Franciscans. https://twitter.com/ingerhogstrom/status/1385082841680072711
Dan White was the only supervisor to vote no on banning discrimination against gay people in housing and jobs. Diane Feinstein voted yes, reluctantly, citing concerns about landlords being forced to rent to gay sadist murderers.
anyway since this entire thread was bad stuff. one thing i thought was cool to learn about Harvey Milk was that he was passionate about transit & reducing car use. he wanted more Muni service, free Muni, no cars downtown, no new city garages. called out "transit first" hypocrisy.
