As a medical student I’m not allowed to treat confirmed COVID cases. I’m not in the eye of the storm, but in the front lines nonetheless. We see the indirect consequences of the pandemic.
I see dementia & psychiatric illness precipitated by isolation; the deterioration of pre-existing conditions due to lack of ressources; patients having to wait months for urgent surgeries; humans dying alone. This indirect death/morbidity toll isn’t as publicized as COVID deaths.
I think what’s most cruel is that collectively we don’t allow ourselves to grieve. In my case I went from terror to elation post vaccination, but some days I’m reminded of the buried trauma. I think we deserve to & should rejoice, but I hope we take the time to grieve after that.
