[MY thoughts on the Joint Training Arc in the Manga]
The foundation for something great was there. I personally feel it could have been leagues above the Sports Festival, but it did far too many things wrong in my opinion. Let’s start with Fight #1.
Tribute: @TheAshySavant
The entirety of Fight #1 felt like Tsuyu vs the world to me. For a side character she did extremely well but there’s also some consequences to that. Everyone was heavily overshadowed, including the opposing 1-B team. Yes, they all contributed to their win or loss (in 1-B’s case),
but in the end I don’t feel most of the students got a chance to showcase as much as I would have hoped. This was around where Horikoshi’s health was in decline and the panelling took a hit compared to now. I’m not gonna take points off for that but its something to remember.
Now moving to Fight #2. Momo and Kendo having interactions before this arc made this fight really desirable to me. Tokoyami vs Vantablack was also something to look forward to. Overall, there was a ton of diverse quirks in this fight and this time I had no problems with how...
they were showcased alongside their users. The problem was the transitions between multiple characters and Momo’s display of brains. For someone with the hero name Creati I was hoping she’d be more...creative? I understand how her quirk works but from a reader standpoint...
using cannons over and over again really isn’t screaming “growth” to me, even though she used it calculatingly. The transitions between multiple characters felt off compared to previous arcs. The action was top notch in this group battle which makes it less noticeable.
Now for Fight #3. This match was where Todoroki and Iida really start moulding into better versions of themselves. The development from both was amazing and both got to display what they could do to the fullest. Todoroki had to deal with a hard counter in Tetsutetsu while Iida...
got the chance to showcase his brand new leg pipes. The struggle from both sides were apparent but once again the fight ran into the problem where the spotlight will only stay on a select few. I understand other characters aren’t as important but I would have liked to see more.
Now for my second favourite fight just because of how it handles Bakugo’s character. Fight #4 and #5 are the ones I had least amount of problems with. Fight #4 gets straight to business with Bakugo claiming to want absolute victory. At the start, the readers are lead to believe..
he wants the spotlight to himself and will mess things up by doing things by himself....WRONG. Throughout the entire fight he has his teammates’ backs while they have his back. The one sidedness doesn’t matter here because it furthers Bakugo’s development so much.
Fight #5. One word: Perfection. Everyone gets their chance to shine in this one and not once did I feel a character didn’t show what they were fully capable of. It furthers the story revolving around the main character while giving us more lore.

Nav’s JT Score: 6.5-7/10
Couple Details Missed:
-Even during a binge read, the pacing of the entire arc wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be.
-Class 1-B at times felt like Pokémon being used to level up 1-A and I hate that feeling. I get they’re side characters but it could have felt more natural.
