SAYING IT AGAIN!!! So so exciting we are all going back to the work but we have to be more mindful than ever that there are artists feeling all the pressure of work coming alive again, and dealing with LOTS OF EMAILS with none of the usual ways of relieving those stresses...
Things aren't fully open. People can't just pop into friends/family. Being at home doesn't automatically give us more hours in the day. Working form home doesn't make emails more urgent than before. PLEASE. Be mindful. Work mindfully. Make it a priority to take care of people.
And I would go as far as to say that some projects are over-communicating. Don't displace anxieties onto artists. It is no one's fault that we've found ourselves trying to make 'late' projects happen. Stay present. And the responsibility of that does not just lie with the artists.
I've had two friends/artists burn out and feel out of control in just the last 2 weeks because of deadlines that are not that life/death. I am a big advocate of just getting on with the work you're paid for. But I am a big advocate for humans and wellbeing too. Advocate for care.
And yes it's a lucky thing to have work, and those artists I'm sure genuinely feel lucky, but let's not forget that the same humans doing the work are the same humans that have lived through the last year. And have had to live through much more. Artists look after each other too.
Rethink projects if those involved no longer have the emotional capacity. Remember the journey of the projects and the demands already made. Make new lines in budgets for wellbeing. Open the conversation with people about what they need physically, mentally, emotionally. Be that.
We all have to communicate. But almost every artist/creative I'm speaking to is saying email communication is out of hand. What do we do? How do we stop and think before pressing send every day? When are writers meant to clear their head enough to write? Or creatives to create?
Not every project has to feel like a house is on fire. Very few of us have coasted through the last year. We have seen and felt things we thought we would never feel or never wanted to feel. Just yesterday news on its own would be enough to floor me...now times that by 5000!!!
Compassion. Empathy. Generosity. Truth. Listening. Allowing. Giving space. Making less products. Making more artists. Loving what we can. Mourning what we can't change. Accepting nothing feels the same for any of us. And creatives are still out here trying to make it make sense.
And if you are working with Black artists/creatives and other peoples that face racial hatred and discrimination, and that is not at the forefront of your mind as to why they might be PARTICULARLY TIRED/OVERWHELMED then truly WTF?!!! We don’t always talk about it but FEELING IT!
