I've started writing this tweet twenty different ways and I think the best way for me to do it is just write my feelings out without trepidation or overanalyzing. Read in Full Color was something small that grew into something so great. 1/ https://twitter.com/consciouskidlib/status/1384885959699873795
In 2019, Read in Full Color was just a small idea I had to fill a pocket in marketing that I thought was lacking in picture books. I didn't think about how this would look in the future and I never would have imagined this turning into a tearjerking video and 2/
a profile like @TheConsciousKid debuting it. But even more so, I am so beyond moved to give a space for these narratives to thrive and live. I did not grow up with any picture books of characters that looked like me. I had nothing celebrating my story and I know 3/
that there were others who felt the same alienation, lack of representation, and sadness over realizing that there was not a place for us in the picture. Even though it's taken so long for the industry to catch up as a whole, I am so grateful to be in a place 4/
where the support has been unbelievable and that there are so many people with the same mission: to give power and voices to those who haven't before.
This is not just for the kids who are reading these books now, but for those who have grown up without them. 5/

It's such an emotional rollercoaster reading a picture book that captures who they are. I want adults to love these books just as much as kids and I know they will.

is to encourage white creators to be mindful of the representation in their stories, regardless of them being picture books or not. Readers are not homogenous. They are made up of beautiful and complex makeups and the more you do (in the RIGHT way) to represent 7/
them, the better.
And of course, I hope that those in the kidlit community that have the power to thoughtfully publish and amplify these stories will do just that. These stories are not going away.
tl;dr - PUBLISH MORE DIVERSE CREATORS AND INCLUSIVE STORIES. 8/8
