We are thrilled to endorse the #CollegeForAll bill introduced today by @SenSanders + @RepJayapal. This bill is a huge step for higher education in the United States. It addresses multiple crises we face: affordability, debt, and faculty labor. #newdealforhighered
This bill will help ensure that all people in the U.S. can attend college for free or at a low cost. It will ensure that future generations escape student debt + it will ensure that students get more support than simply tuition, since college costs far exceed the sticker price.
The bill also takes TWO significant steps towards ending adjunctification. 1. It requires that institutions receiving College for All $ move to 75% of instruction being performed by tenured or tenure-track (TT) faculty within five years. #NewDealforHigherEd
2. Pivotally, the bill requires that institutions prioritize getting new TT jobs to workers currently in adjunct, contract, contingent, and non-tenure track positions. #NewDealforHigherEd
C4A must translate into TT work for contingent workers at mass scale. That's why we'll fight to ensure that via C4A, the fed gov prevents institutions from avoiding the 75% floor through increased class sizes, course loads, curricular cuts, or other measures. #NewDealforHigherEd
We look forward to working with partners in the labor, student, and debt forgiveness movements to pass this bill + further transformational legislation to rebuild the U.S. higher education system around the principles of equity, democracy, and justice for all. #NewDealforHigherEd
