Why Bon Appétit by Katy Perry is hugely misunderstood on and has partly destroyed Katy's career? Why the song is underestimate and deserves more recognition from the public? - A tread
I will first explain the reasons for the flop and then explain the real message Katy wanted to convey in the videoclip, I hope you will like it :)
Bon Appétit is Katy Perry's second single. She had announced the video via twitter on 25 April with a photo of a recipe with confusing words and via Instagram with a photo of her head in the middle of a dish of fruit and vegetables.
The song came out in 28 April and it had everything to become a big hit, Urban-Pop, Fresh, Heady, Radio-Friendly, and Electro, with a powerful chorus. Despite this, the videoclip, in which she denounces sexual abuse was very badly received by the public.
Unfortunately It destroyed Katy's image and also career. The media began to portray her as a weird provocative slut. The main reasons for this mixed reception are :
The fact that Katy has cut her hair. Her change of look and haircut were the most criticized things in her career. She lost a lot of fans because of it and that explains in part the flop of Bon Appétit.
She went blonde with short hair and image is very important in the pop world, especially for Katy Perry.
Many people said she was ugly and scary while she wanted to be more authentic and go back to being Katheryn Hudson to be more confident and honest. But she she got a torrent of hate against her just because of this and It had broken her heart.
-The fact that the clip was considered too provocative and disturbing and that the audience didn't understood the concept of the song. Everyone started saying that Katy had become provocative and had gone off the rails and that she wanted to do sexual songs to attract the public.
Some media and People went so far as to say that it promoted cannibalism and Satanism claiming that she had become disgusting and abject. For example, some religious websites claim that Katy eats human flesh every day and has made a pact with the devil.
-The fact that Katy’s label had forced her to make a duet with Migos who are homophobic although she is one of the most committed figures in terms of LGBT. Katy was very criticized and insulted for this while it was her label's fault.
One of the moments when she was the most hated and mocked was when she did her Bon Appétit performance on SNL, in which she tried to improvise after Migos refused to perform with Drag Queens. Katy was ridiculed by the entire internet for her dancing as she tried to save her show.
She had a panic attack before this performance and had done her best to perform with what she had when nothing was planned. The hate train had intensified and Katy was called talentless, a flop and weird.
She unfollowed Migos on Instagram after that and this was the last performance Katy had with them.
The real message that Katy wanted to give is however clearly illustrated in the clip of Bon Appétit even if it wasn’t understood :the woman is considered by the man as a sexual and pleasure object, a dish to be enjoyed and manipulated as he wants like food .
She is cooked and seasoned to be eaten by rich diners. Except that the situation is turned on its head at the end of the video: the guests find themselves strapped to their chairs and they are the ones that end up being eaten.
The meaning of this song, although it was not perceived by the audience, is: "I am not the sex object you imagined: I got you! ". The clip is a metaphor representing the fact that even today, women are considered by many to be objects of pleasure.
Finally, this clip shows what a feminist, self-confident, determined and strong woman Katy is and show that she wants to be an activist for women and hopes to change the way men see women. :)
