There’re already “reports” about audiences in China complaining about #ShangChi. Get ready bc there’s going to be a LOT of that in the coming months.

Marvel and others need to realize that the success of Shang-Chi and other Asian led US films is dependent on ASIAN-AMERICANS. 1/

A US studio can’t pander to China by trying to tell their version of a Chinese story. China doesn’t want that. They don’t give a about “representation.” They see Chinese people everywhere!

#CrazyRichAsians was a huge hit in the US & other countries, but NOT China #ShangChi 2/

Chinese people view Americans as White people. They watch US films to see exotic white people blow stuff up.

They also don’t view Asian-AMERICANS as their own. We’re foreigners to them.

Look at the highest grossing US films in China. They want blockbusters. #ShangChi 3/

Remember when Simu Liu was announced as #ShangChi? Some Chinese Youtuber got a ton of hits and pub for calling him “ugly” and having random folks on the streets confirm.

This is the plight of Asian-Americans/Canadians. We aren’t “American” enough” or “Asian enough” 4/

Sure #ShangChi will still do ok in China bc it’s #Marvel. But they’re going to complain endlessly. It’s NOT their movie.

@MarvelStudios needs to recognize that it’s ASIAN-AMERICANS who will come out. WE celebrate representation. Engage the Asian-Am community. @shangchi

BOTTOM LINE - DON’T PANDER TO CHINA.
