Tuesday's storytelling session from @aandeddb at @Media_Trust's #DigitalSpringSchool really helped me pull my head out of the detail and reconsider some of my approaches to digital storytelling.

Surprise, I made some notes into a thread!

🧵[1/]👇
[2/] #DigitalSpringSchool - why is storytelling such a powerful tool?

🔵 Stories are part of human identity
🔵 Help us connect w/ people on emotional vs rationale level
🔵 More memorable + evoke responses inside of us
🔵 Help organise disparate ideas into accessible content
[3/] #DigitalSpringSchool - Top tips for implementing storytelling strategies

🔵 Be single minded, pick one element of your work, focus down on that. Don’t overcomplicate the narrative
🔵 Really know your audience. Match your language and tone to your audience’s identity
[4/] #DigitalSpringSchool - Top tips for implementing storytelling strategies cont.

🔵 Decide on the emotion you want to elicit
🔵 Have a clear call to action. Not necessary a click
[5/] #DigitalSpringSchool - What’s the current digital context + how does it affect our storytelling

🔵 Individual screen time has rocketed. People online longer
🔵 Brands pivoting to more authentic tone of voice on their digital platforms – people want human connection
[6/] #DigitalSpringSchool - What’s the current digital context + how does it affect our storytelling cont.

🔵 Social reach remains huge - Facebook growth 3.3% / Insta growth 11% / Pinterest growth 5% / Twitter decreased by 16% but remains main channel for reactive news content
[7/] #DigitalSpringSchool - The right content for the right channel

🔵 Selecting the right channel for your digital content is critical
🔵Don’t repeat same asset across channels, this will have limited effectiveness - not one size fits all
[8/] #DigitalSpringSchool - The change in narrative arcs

🔵3 secs to grab audience attention online so starting with the beginning + expecting audience to watch until end is no longer a given
🔵 Traditional arc (beginning, middle, end, CTA) not always applicable now in digital
[9/] #DigitalSpringSchool - The change in narrative arcs cont.

🔵An emerging narrative arc is to invert this, + start at the beginning (even if it doesn’t make sense to your audience!) – grab their attention, and then tell you story
[10/] #DigitalSpringSchool - Be aware of how users of different social channels use sound (or don’t !)
[11/end] #DigitalSpringSchool - thank you @Media_Trust, @aandeddb, @SophieChaytor and Paulina for your presentations on Tuesday - really got a lot out of and helped me really look at how we can be more impactful in our charity storytelling.
