So the vote to fly Pride flags at @HCDSB schools didn’t happen last night. This means that have two more weeks to drum up support for a move that will support #LGBTQ+ students.

In early April, my sibling delegated at a HCDSB meeting to the trustees asking for permission for schools in the board to fly the Pride Flag in June. Two trustees then decided to make this a formal motion at the next meeting; one that would be voted on by all trustees.

(2/?)
That meeting happened last night. 5 delegations were heard in response to the motion (3 for, 2 against). Here is the link for people who want to watch ().

Please be warned, the last two delegations are not kind towards LGBTQ+ individuals.

(4/?)
When the time hit 10:00pm, there was a vote not to extend the meeting. We are assuming this means that the discussion and vote will be continued at the next meeting. This means we have two weeks to get more attention on this issue and drum up support for flying the flag.

(5/?)
The best way to do this is email the trustees ( https://www.hcdsb.org/our-board/board-of-trustees/).

Explain to them why flying Pride flags is aligned with their board values, Catholic values, and why visible support of #LGBTQ students is crucial at the schools these students attend.

(6/?)
One argument against the flag is people don’t think it will be enough to make schools #LGBTQ safe space. I agree with this. BUT it shows #LGBTQ students that their school board is willing to face criticism to help them feel safer, appreciated, and included.

(7/?)
Flying Pride flags at schools in the @HCDSB will provide an instantly recognizable symbol to Catholic #LGBTQ people and allies that their community is not afraid to show the world that they support them and love them and want them at their schools.

(8/?)
I also believe that while saying yes to Pride flags is not enough on its own to solve all LGBTQ+ issues at Catholic schools, saying no IS ENOUGH to push some LGBTQ+ students into the closet for the rest of their time at the @HCDSB.

(9/?)
Not to mention that saying no will embolden the intolerant teachers and students whose words and actions currently make LGBTQ+ students feel unsafe and unwanted in their schools. We cannot let this happen.

(10/?)
So please, if you care at all about the wellbeing of #LGBTQ students in Catholic spaces, please sign the petition at the beginning of this thread and if you are a part of the @HCDSB please email the trustees advocating for flying the Pride flag.

(11/?)
Lastly, please please PLEASE send this to anyone you know who ever attended or had children that attended school in the HCDSB. The more internal support we can get the better. 🏳️‍🌈
