Do you want to make 6 figure?

Here is how I did it before 30

//THREAD//
I was good at math in school and I always wanted to make good money.

I went to a major Big Ten University and studied engineering.
Out of school I thought I wanted to be a pastor. I took a job in town until I figured out where I wanted to go to seminary. I didn’t want a company to sink a bunch of training into me only to leave a year later.

I only made $45K
I ended up really liking working and was good at it. I decided I wanted to stay in industry.

Even though I saved the company MILLIONS through projects I found on my own they only game me a small raise after I FOUGHT to have my annual appraisal.

After 3 yrs it was time to leave.
I found a job closer to home working in sourcing. Even though I had no sourcing experience I got the job because of my engineering degree.

I was making $55K
At first I failed awfully at the job.

But a year later I figured it out, and was completing my job in 25 hours or less a week.

This allowed to work on some bigger initiatives with the executive team.

I received a 10% raise.

I was making $61K
The organization was going through a Lean transformation and they needed people to help bring the culture of process improvement.

I did many process improvement projects in sourcing and was offered the job.

I moved departments and got a 5% raise.

I was making $65K
I again saved the company MILLIONS, but only received a small raise.

I studied hard and received a certification important in my field.

After 2.5 years at my 2nd company I stated job hunting...
I found a good job at a hospital doing continuous improvement work.

I was making $78K

I did well and was promoted within the department after 6 months

I was making $82K
I started an MBA

I worked a lot with one department director.

I did good work for them and got along with their team.

After 2 years at the hospital when a managerial position opened on their team they offered me the job.

I was making over $100K
So what are some lessons

1) Get the most technical degree you can, it opens ALOT of doors. If you don’t have a technical degree get a certification.

2) Do really good work, it will give you opportunities to do interesting work, be part of bigger projects and/or get promoted.
3) Don’t feel bad about leaving a company or having them spend money on training you. I should’ve never taken my first job.

4) Certifications and MBA’s are mostly dumb, but they open doors. Competence + Certification + Experience = Opportunities
5) To get the raise you deserve you need to leave. It’s rare to get big raises at the same organization.
