That Ikoyi/Banana Island video. Whew.

I understand the sentiment behind wanting exclusivity and all the senrenre that comes with paying a lot of money for stuff (accommodation in this case). It& #39;s human nature at the end of the day.

But then... I
It& #39;s only someone who& #39;s dangerously blind to our current reality that would complain about seeing poor people round his beloved high brow estates.

Even a child born yesterday is aware of the overwhelming poverty in Nigeria. Anyone with common sense would know that poor people...
always want to sell their goods and services to rich people. That answers the question of why there are so many vendors around. They don& #39;t have money but they have things you want. You have money, and you& #39;d gladly pay for the things they have. Simple.
On the squatters & people loitering, it& #39;s also easy to understand why. Where do you think all the carpenters, painters, laundrymen, etc who arrive 2 seconds after you call them come from? A good number of those guys hanging around also know you& #39;d pay a premium for their services.
Even the ones who don& #39;t have anything to offer are drawn to the appearance of wealth. It gives them something to dream about. Something to take their minds of the depressing reality of their own situation. "One day we go make am". That #500 you give them when they hail you is at
least two meals.

The situation may not look pretty but I think it& #39;s even needed. Nigerians are poor. Many of us are insulated from the reality of just how bad things are. For too long you& #39;ve built fences and gates estates to keep the poor out. Now they& #39;re at your doorstep.
Humbling isn& #39;t it? Knowing that even with your white Benz and 3-bedroom flat in Ikoyi, you& #39;re still no safer than the average Nigerian. All it takes is one moment of madness and bam! You& #39;re at the mercy of the same poor people you despise. You& #39;d kiss their feet in that situation
So you can choose to pretend Nigeria& #39;s poverty problem doesn& #39;t exist, or you can use whatever old money influence you think you have to lobby for something different. The choice is yours.

Just one thing, during the violence that erupted on the island during the protests, ...
you remember that woman who told her daughter to pack her passport and a few clothes to flee the country because things weren& #39;t safe? If nothing& #39;s done, this would happen again. On a larger scale. And this time, even the roads to the airport would be blocked.
