Liberty Street. Mural fenced off due to material falling from a height on old poorly maintained building. #Cork #SaferStreets
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. #Cork #Heritage
The quote is not from Jefferson as often thought but from a great Newmarket man, John Philpott Curran.
Dublin, 1790:  “The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance".

Around the time this building and its neighbours were built.
Lord Byron on Curran: "I have heard that man speak more poetry than I have seen written".

Marx described him as the greatest "people's advocate" of the eighteenth century."

John Philpot Curran (24 July 1750 – 14 October 1817) Orator, politician, wit, lawyer Master of the Rolls.
It is very possible that JP Curran actually saw that very building, then newly built and splendid, when he was in Cork, it being a stone's throw from the Courthouse.

I wonder what he would say if he saw it today.
Terence MacSwiney saw this coming, judging by his expression.
I am hearing reports that the building roof is holed. @corkcitycouncil will be moving on this certainly.

Anyone want to guess how long this fence will be here?
Silver lining from this thread is you now know which Cork lawyer was praised by Karl Marx and Byron.

Newmarket has a statue to Sarah Curran fiancée of Robert Emmet

Boston boasts of Bunker Hill; brave men fought at Gettysville. Newmarket too, has honours like the rest.
Here ‘t was Curran first drew breath; after Emmet’s tragic death
They laid his sweetheart Sarah here to rest.
My late grand aunt Brigid proudly recited those words to me as she was tending the pot of stew over the turf fire in her thatched home outside Newmarket.

Sarah Curran, one of few Irish women honoured with a statue:
