Greetings from @cape_sd, the latest stop on our #KnowledgeMatters School Tour.

We’re visiting classrooms alongside Cape Henlopen educators @MelissaSTuttle @mikeleague @JennyNaumanCape @KCorbidge @CapeArchambault, to see #ARCCore firsthand!

Our fellow visitors will be sharing glimpses of the work in @cape_sd, too... please follow them for more!

. @cape_sd has seen steady reading proficiency growth since adopting #ARCCore.

Teachers praise the @AmericanReading IRLA assessment for its ability to pinpoint each student’s individual needs – and it also gives school wide and building wide windows into student performance.
One consistent theme from the day: a high volume of writing work, and writing work that is connected to the reading work with texts!

Starting in grade K.

Back to the theme of data-driven instruction:

Hear @KCorbidge explain how some students showed one year’s reading growth in ONE MONTH, after team “huddles” allowed them to support a 4th grade teacher in closing foundational skills gaps.

Such a powerful story!
Let’s take a look at a K lesson. It’s built from the text “Who eats what in the rainforest?”

Nicole Anderson starts by activating kids’ learning from prior lessons.

#KnowledgeMatters #DelawareDelivers
Who are the plant eaters – also known as herbivores? The meat eaters?

Ms. Anderson leads the students in a conversation based on texts about animals that have been read in prior lessons.

Plants that eat meat??? 🌱

Venus fly traps are fascinating to Kinders! Grayson has been researching them at home.

Anyone who says Kinders are too young for science hasn’t seen lessons like this one!

Ms. Anderson weaves some reinforcement of student learning about syllables into the discussion. 👏

What’s next in the lesson?

A choral read of “Who eats what in the rainforest?”

Then students will do their own research at their seats with related texts.
“Pl pl plant”

Ms. Anderson highlights a blend that students have learned in their foundational skills work during the choral read.
What’s at the top of the food chain? Who eats the Jaguar?

Kinders have hypotheses and wonderings.

Ms. Anderson steadily reminds them of how they’ll prove these ideas and answer Q’s:

In the texts! 👏

Every student is engaged in discussion.

Students explore the rainforest food web...

#KnowkedgeMatters #DelawareDelivers
And now we’re going to answer that question about Jaguars in another text!

Love how Ms. Anderson reminds kids that reading the text, rather than inferring meaning from pictures, is the key to making meaning from the text!

Also, some adorable K reflections & connections. ❤️
Ms. Anderson tees up the writing task that students will do...
“Fr fr frog”

The students’ critique of her frog drawing does not distract Ms. Anderson from modeling attention to sounds and blends! 😂

Here’s the kinder writing from that lesson!

Is there anything more delightful than sentences written by kindergarteners?

We got to catch up with Ms. Anderson later.

She is a 20-year teacher, and she describes this work with high-quality curriculum as a “total transformation” in how K is taught.

She even wondered if her Kinders could tackle this content. The strong engagement showed otherwise!
