Th anonymous hate accounts from students at @FrostburgState make it so much harder for me to feel safe on campus and in the community at large. Do I support free speech, yes. Do I support hate speech free of consequences, absolutely not.
Seems like we need to be having a discussion about the overall campus environment that has been allowed to flourish the past couple years. Those 45 minute mandatory online trainings don’t work and if our own president doesn’t attend DEI stuff, how can we expect students to?
We need real changes in our curriculum, starting in the gen ed classes (ORIE in particular), that focus on the real history Black people have endured in this country and in this town. We need administrative changes so that racist professors are held accountable and not tolerated.
How else can we expect students to feel safe? Anything less than real, tangible change is performative and enables hate speech like that we are seeing today from anon accounts (ironically the day after the Chauvin verdict).
