The earth and moon kingdoms have always been close enough to touch. for as long as anyone can remember they’ve always been side-by-side, yet no citizen of either kingdom was to step foot in the other. The two kingdoms were always so close, but so far apart. no one had a reason

for the law anymore, some theorize that there must’ve been a war sometime in the past, but there was no written history and no one left who remembers. Still, the citizens of kingdom earth and the citizens of kingdom moon stay on their prospective spheres floating in space.

Until one fateful night when everything changed.

Kim Taehyung, a farmer’s son from the rural side of kingdom earth, he’s known for being too curious for his own good, but that’s never stopped him. It’s late at night and the skies are clear, the moon that is oh so close is

shining so brightly and warm. Taehyung is in awe as he always is. He wishes to see kingdom moon, more than anything. He feels like a tide is constantly pulling him closer and closer to the forbidden land, but he never crosses that line. He never dreamed he would be the one to

break the centuries long rule, but when he caught a glimpse of someone on the moon, his feelings changed completely. Taehyung continues walking a little farther and uses a nearby telescope to get a closer look at the beautiful creature he had just seen.

His eyes land on a tall, dark headed, bright, and perfect man. He. was. beautiful. He met eyes with Taehyung through the telescope, the farmer’s son’s heart almost beat out of his chest. Taehyung pulled away from the telescope and stood looking back at the beautiful citizen of

kingdom moon.

“hi” the moon citizen broke the silence

“hi” taehyung wasn’t sure if he was allowed to respond, but he didn’t care.

“my name’s jin. and you?”

“taehyung.”

“it’s nice to meet you taehyung.”

“likewise, jin.”

Jin was about to open his mouth to continue their conversation, but before he could say anything his facial expression changed. It seemed like he heard someone coming. The boy on the moon hurriedly reached into his pocket, pulled out a small piece of paper, and wrote something

down. Before Taehyung could even realize what was happening he was watching a small paper airplane make it’s way from one kingdom to the other. The boy on earth catches the small piece of paper and looks but up to the boy on the moon.

“your majesty!” a tall man that looked like

a soldier of some type, maybe a guard, came rushing towards Jin on the moon. Taehyung just did his best to pretend not to hear or watch.

“Prince Seokjin what on asteroids are you doing out here!” the guard shouted at Jin before bowing in his direction.

“I just wanted some

fresh air. I’m tired of being in the palace all the time that’s all.” Jin responded in a soft voice with a small smile painted on his face. He was obviously lying, but the guard bought the story all the same.

“we should get you back, sir” the guard was still kneeling as he

spoke to the prince of kingdom moon.

“of course.” Jin sent a quick, but detected, glance to the boy on earth before he departed out of sight.

Taehyung rushed home to his small cottage on his fathers farm. It was in the middle of nowhere, but Taehyung liked that. He hurriedly

went to his bedroom and opened the small paper that Jin had given him.

It read:

Dear Taehyung,

I know this probably feels wrong. But when I saw you I knew we had to speak. To.. meet even. I know it’s forbidden, but we here on kingdom moon do not even have a reason why.

I’m hoping your kingdom is the same, that your feelings are the same. I would like to see you again. Tomorrow same time and place.

Taehyung couldn’t believe his eyes. The prince of kingdom moon wants to see /him/ again. Taehyung also couldn’t believe that the prince felt the same as him, he almost couldn’t believe he even felt the way he did in the first place. Taehyung explains the entire situation to

himself as fate. The tide that’s been pulling him to kingdom moon all these years. It must’ve been fate.

[the next meeting]

Prince Seokjin was nervous as he sat in a small crater that dipped in the beautiful surface of the moon. He wondered if the boy from earth would return

to see him. Jin had always felt fascinated by kingdom earth, so much so his father, King of kingdom moon, has him under a strict schedule so that he isn’t distracted by his “unrealistic” daydreams. After all, it doesn’t really look good for the prince of one kingdom to be more

infatuated with another. Especially when that other kingdom is forbidden to step foot on.

“hi.” this time it was Taehyung who broke the silence.

“hi.” all the anxiety in Jins chest melted away as soon as he saw the earth boy.

“you came.”

“I did.”

The two were silent for a

moment. They took in the view of each other and let their hearts feel to their content. It wasn’t uncomfortable in the slightest.

“so, what should we do?” The prince on the moon worriedly asked what they both were wondering. It was obvious they were bound to fall in love, and

he didn’t want them to end up like Romeo and Juliet.

“to be honest. im not sure. though i have heard rumor of a connection between our kingdoms. left undestroyed unlike the others.” Taehyung spoke with pure innocence. He didn’t want to raise the princes expectations, they may

never get to meet. Taehyung simply hoped that kingdom moon had their own version of the rumor, maybe one with more details.

“the lover’s ladder?” jin cocked his head to the side and looked down with a smile to the blushing boy on earth.

“l-lover’s what?”

“the lover’s ladder.

it’s a ladder that connects earth to the moon. there was once two citizens who were madly in love and used it to meet, but it’s just a children’s tale here. do you think it really exists?”

“i do.” Taehyung was always curious after all.

“then we should find it.” Jin smiled at

Taehyung before his face morphed into a similar expression.

Someone was coming.

Taehyung reached into the chest pocket of his bibs and pulled out a paper airplane.

“hey!” it was a hushed yell, but it got the princes attention just in time for him to catch the paper as it

reached the moon.

The two went their own ways and longed to meet again.

When Jin returned to the palace, he went into his sleeping quarters and opened the paper air plane.

It read:

Dear Jin,

For as long as I can remember, I have always been pulled to the moon. Now

I know, I was being pulled to you. When I saw your face say hello to me, all my bad days meant nothing to me. Would you come fly to me? I hope we can be together one day. Jin, my prince from the moon. I think i'm falling in love.

[the next meeting]

Taehyung made his way back to the top of the hill once more. When he got there Jin hadn’t gotten there yet. Taehyung sat and waited patiently for his prince. A couple of minutes

pass by, still no sign of the boy on the moon. Taehyung lays down and watched the stars as he waits, still patient. Taehyung waits three hours for his prince, but he never showed up.

Taehyung wasn’t angry. He knew Seokjin wouldn’t just not show up. Taehyung left the meeting

spot with a worried heart and planned to return the next night.

[the next meeting]

Taehyung reaches the top of the hill, again, and is relieved when his eyes meet those of his beautiful prince.

“i’m so sorry. i can explain.” Jin looked tired, but Taehyung decided not to

comment on it.

“there is no need to apologize. I just need to know. are you all right?” Taehyung could hardly sleep he was so worried.

“yes, yes. i'm fine. I have good news.” A huge magnificent smile spreads across Jin’s face.

“you do?” Taehyung smiles a box shaped smile

right back to his prince.

“mhm. I found it. The ladder! Well, I have a map. For you. That’s why I wasn't here last night. I had to map the way out while everyone was asleep.”

“you found it!? You mean it’s really real!? we can meet…but, but how? how’d you find it?”

“I snuck into the forbidden section of the palace library. Tae there is so much history that no one knows about. So much about our kingdoms. About… us.”

“about us?” Taehyung was confused, but his heart has never felt so warm.

“yes. about us. but i can show you /in person/.

here.”

Jin throws down a larger paper plane. The map.

“I have to go now, but tomorrow we will meet here a little earlier and we can walk to the ladder together okay?”

“okay”

The two boys once again go their different ways, but this time with a new type of longing. A

longing they now know can and /will/ be fulfilled. soon.

Taehyung makes it back home to his cottage and studies the map. When he opens it a flower falls out from the creases along with a smaller paper plane, another letter.

It read:

Dearest Taehyung,

I am in love with you. You are my earth and all I see is you. Our kingdoms know nothing. But we will soon understand everything. My father says I live my life with my eyes closed and my head in space. Do you mind if I open my eyes and hold you?

[the final meeting]

The two boys from different kingdoms meet one final time on separate ground. Taehyung uses the map and Jin follows along hoping he mapped earth correctly. It takes about two

hours before low and behold, through the fog on earth Taehyung could see it. A ladder. Lover’s Ladder. It was a simple thing. Wood and rope connecting two forbidden lands for who knows how long or for why.

“there it is.” Jin said in a hushed and amazed tone, even though he had

seen the ladder before, he still couldn’t believe it was real. Now, it’s right in front of him along with his boy from earth.

“wait for me?” Taehyung shakily asked the prince in the stars. He was getting choked up for many reasons, but the one that reigned the strongest was

the fact he was about to meet his prince. To be held by /his/ prince. Years of fate pulling them together, years leading up to this night, to this moment, to this ladder.

“always” Jin answered with longing and sincerity. He would always wait for his earth.

Taehyung drops the

map and starts climbing the ladder. They lose sight of each other due to the thick fog. Taehyung is a little frightened seeing how far he is from the ground. From kingdom earth. How far away he was from the only safety he’s ever known. He is breaking the law, but it doesn’t feel

wrong. Taehyung feels like this is exactly where he is supposed to be. On his way to his prince.

He climbs and climbs. The boy from earth’s heart beats faster with every step. The boy from the moon’s heart longs more and more with every passing minute he waits.

Finally, the prince of kingdom moon and see the beautiful dark curly hair peek through the thick fog between their respective spheres. He almost cried out, but he knows it’s better if they remain silent for now.

Taehyung looks up and meets eyes, the closest glance they’ve ever

shared. And they’re about to be even closer. There are only five steps left now. Taehyung skips two and almost falls all the way back down, but he couldn’t help it, he had to see his prince.

Jin reaches his hand out as Taehyung's foot reaches the last step of the latter. Their

fingers intertwine and Jin immediately pulls Taehyung in for a bear hug. It’s warm and it’s safe. Nothing has ever felt as right as their bodies together. They fit like puzzle pieces.

“my prince.” Taehyung hums into Jin's neck. It’s a touching moment, they’ve been separated by

useless laws and gaps in space. But now, now they’re together and they intend to stay that way.

“I know this is fast but i need to take you to the palace library, you need to understand what i said that night i gave you the map. we have to be quick.” Jin spoke with love and

urgency. Whatever the prince knew, it was important.

“of course… but wait” Taehyung’s face grew a little pink before he pulled away from his prince. He kept their bodies close, only pulling away enough to look Jin in the eyes.

Taehyung and Jin stay like that, not for long,

but enough to understand what Taehyung meant. Jin moves his hands from around Taehyung's waist to cup the younger boy's face. They close their eyes and lean in.

The two share a soft, deep, and long kiss. A kiss shared between worlds. It was full of love, longing, and want.

They kissed as if they had kissed a thousand times before in another life. This was the first time their lips have ever met, but they knew it didn’t feel that way. It felt fated, they were meant to be together.

Taehyung is the one to, reluctantly, pull away from the kiss.

“we should go.”

The two walk quickly, hand in hand, all the way to the palace. Everyone is sleeping and the only guards that are stationed are at the front of the palace. Jin helps Taehyung to slip into a window of the library. They sneak all the way to the forbidden section

and Jin opens a large and dusty book to a marked page.

It read:

“ STARCROSSED PROPHECY “
“ Kingdom Moon, known for beautifully decorated craters and the most breathtaking palace of all the lands. Beauty reigns over the citizens like rain, a citizen kingdom moon almost

glistens like a precious jewel.”

“Kingdom Earth, known for beautiful skies and clouds. The citizens are ethereal and gentle. Citizens of earth are often known as peace givers with pure hearts.”

“These kingdoms have always been side by side, and are destined to remain that way

until the end of time. They are the closest allies in the galaxy.”

“Kingdom Moon and Kingdom Earth share a special spiritual bond. Once every few centuries, two soulmates are born. One residing on the moon, the other on earth. In order for the spiritual bond to remain intact,

these soulmates must find each other and balance the connection between the moon and earth. These two will feel a pull to the opposite kingdom, and once they are together they will know they’ve met their one and only life companion.”

“oh my stars.” Taehyung was tearing up

once again as he read the old book of prophecies.

“so we’re.. soulmates?”

“yes.” Jin looked at his boy from earth and hugged him tightly.

“We should tell the rulers, they need to know.”

“But what if they don’t believe us.”

“We will show them the book.”

“Jin, I love you.”

“I love you too, Tae.”

With that the two boys rushed to the king's quarters with the book. Jin entered first and spoke with his father. After a while Taehyung was called into the room.

“So I take it you’re from earth?” The king's voice roared throughout

the palace, but it wasn’t aggressive. It was a leader's voice, but it was accepting and proud.

“y-yes sir.” Taehyung gave a bow.

“Well then, I guess i should wake your King shouldn't I? We’ve got soulmates to discuss for the sake of our kingdoms” The king flashed a large and

hearty smile at his son and his fated lover. Afterwards, the king made his leave and attended to the official business he had just been enlightened of.

Jin and Taehyung look at each other with tears in their eyes, Jin runs to his boy from earth, takes his hand, and leads him to

a platform at the top of the palace. It shows the entire view of the kingdom.

“wow” Taehyung was in awe. Everything about the moon was magnificent to the boy, especially the prince that he pulled closer in a hug from the back.

They stood there, Jin in Taehyung's arms,

looking out on the moon. Finally together at last.

“The moon truly is beautiful, isn’t it?” Jin wondered if Taehyung knew what that phrase meant here on kingdom moon, wondered if it was the same down on earth.

Taehyung moved to lean Jin's head back into his shoulder a little

farther, tilted their heads and shared another deep kiss.

Taehyung understood completely.
