George Floyd did not have to die. He did not sacrifice his life. No one should ever say that. Chauvin cruelly took George's life. He has now been punished by the state. Maybe he was the sacrificial lamb offered to relieve a little pressure from the system, enough relief 1/6
to keep most plugged into the status quo. Understand it is not justice, nor is it accountability. As Mariame Kaba says, "you can't hold another stranger accountable". People, not systems practice accountability. The US criminal justice system is not currently capable of 2/6
delivering accountability or justice. As a movement chaplain, my focus is on what we, those who want alternative systems, solutions and accountability need to continue the struggle. So, I just want to say, you are allowed to have conflicting feelings, numbness, confusion. 3/6
Find ways to process. Write, sing. Move. Cry. Laugh. Read those who inspire you. Talk to an elder. Talk to someone who can handle lots of thoughts/emotions. Do something slow and deliberate. There's more state violence in the news today. Engage it at your own pace. You really 4/6
don't have to be on top of everything. You aren't obligated to be in a constant state of rage. And if rage is right there for you, honor it by letting it out. Sleep more. Sit in the sun. Get back to work in life giving ways. Basically, tend to your inner life because you are 5/6
precious. You are needed. You are loved. Black people, especially, hear me, you are precious. You are needed. You are loved. Now, go drink some water and have a snack. Let those of us who will continue to co-create the liberation and love we deserve and desire. 6/6
