1.We asked parents members of our Campaign to provide suggestions about how we promote evidence + learning to parents about the importance of play as part of a child's learning and development. We received a good response to this and there was definitely a pattern in the answers
2. Here are some of the suggestions
-Info at the earliest point via Health Visitor
-An information pack when a child first accesses ELC
-Use of social media by reputable orgs to share evidence/ info
-TV/ documentary style program
-Local parent groups
-Must be promoted by schools

3. Here are some quotes:
"Giving this information from the earliest point. Health visitors are key to this as well as websites accessed by parents. On accessing ELC info should be given then too. ..Needs to continue at school too"

4"Don't call it education should be playgroup/fun sessions"
"Kids who have gone through an education set up that way"
"Nursery staff and council staff must be clued up and lead the way"
"Highlight what’s wrong in the first place and show examples of countries that get it right

5. "Parent groups like NPFS and connect are good. Facebook groups such as deferral support Scotland reach a lot of people. Same with upstart"
"By getting the teachers on side. Many teachers are parents too ... If teachers can sell changes to parents I think it would work"

6."Encourage the personal and the community aspects. How it benefits their children, and how improving education for the whole community is a positive and will improve, not degrade their child's education/advantages/experience. Children shouldn't be stuck in the postcode lottery"
7. "Combination of showing them how it could be better with examples from places that are doing it well and highlighting the potential pitfalls of the current mainstream approach.."
8. "...myth busting that tackles the mainstream beliefs like the three Rs being taught in P1 because otherwise kids will be behind etc... It's really hard to go against the literacy numeracy machine that is really shoved peoples' throats in some schools and has been for years.."
9. "Maybe something about seeing your child as a whole person and that education and schooling is about developing the whole person not just teaching them to read and write.."
10."... I guess parents trust the system to be the right one and taking alternative choices is is scary because they're concerned about doing something outwith the norm, or 'messing up' their child's education. ...."
11. "... HVs encouraging parents to change their mindset would help. Ultimately it needs to come from the schools too, being told P1s need to complete homework and be capable of X, Y and Z just promotes fear that alternatives will mean their child will be 'behind' .."
12. "There are so many individual challenges each of us are fighting, I feel alone and at times intimidated by my daughters nursery, I don't hold any power over a complex educational system and its the power play we need. the Facebook page is amazing for support ..."
13. "but would like to be able to fight more, have the funding, resources, power, belief that we can actually make a difference"

14. Plenty of ideas and thoughts here, most of them easily achievable..?
