What annoys me, sometimes, is when people question my commitment to sustainability when I still research herbicides. Growers use more herbicides, collectively, than all other pesticides and their desire to adopt and use the technology won’t spontaneously disappear... 🧵
Investing in evaluating new chemical technology does help with sustainability, tho. Novel herbicides may have broader spectrums of control and may reduce the need for multiple applications of different chemicals....
Novel herbicides may be safer on the primary crop or on rotational crops, allowing for greater diversity in cropping sequences. Novel herbicides may help with the management costly herbicide resistance problems...
Novel herbicides applied with novel technology (vision-guided sprayers) can help control difficult species, improve crop safety, and reduce overall herbicide inputs. And more. Herbicides aren’t the only solution, but they are still part of the process for many.
