A thread👇:
Now as fans, let's turn our attention to UEFA - let's not ignore their corruption and greediness.
What happened to Champions League being for.... the champions 🤷‍♂️ @UEFA you can't have every team in Europe playing in this competition.
.
The only reason they've done this is to boost revenue for themselves, which explains the bigger clubs frustrations.
1/ @UEFA my solution:
UCL is only for 1st and 2nd team in Leagues. Have an actual round League (like old European cup) and then 2 leg knockouts.
.
Europa League is for cup winners and teams placed 3rd.
.
Have a conference league for those smaller clubs 4th and 5th
2/ @UEFA this ensures new opportunities for smaller clubs whilst maintaining competitiveness and big games for viewership.
This would also add value to the cup competitions and boost viewership there.
Not to mention the winners move up a League (so e.g. Europa have a spot in UCL)
3/ @UEFA won't do this because they want all the teams at high UCL level. This maximises viewership and chances for small vs elite team viewing.
Barca vs Slavia Prague would maximize tickets sales in those regions for instance.
More teams at UCL level = more money.
4/ @UEFA these are the real greedy guys. They don't care about competitiveness or development - it's all about maximizing profits in other regions in Europe.
This is destroying football.
.
My solution would put development at the forefront. So the Leicesters can still get to UCL.
5/ I'm sure these elite clubs are tired of travelling to Slavia Prague and having these uncompetitive matches. They're getting milked by @UEFA for viewership and not getting that slice of the money pie.
.
This has disrupted football's competitiveness and the UCL has lost value.
6/ Yes, I also love underdog stories, I love watching teams like Leicester performing in the UCL. But it's too easy to get there now.
This is THE best club competition itw, it's not for everyone unless you earn it.
It's why football is stagnant and there are no new talents really
7/ Clubs just park the bus to the final and waste time destroying the Slavia Pragues. Developing the game tactically has halted imo.
Look at Ajax in the 70s, they earned that Euro Cup spot and had to reinvent football to win it. They won it 3 times and changed football forever.
8/ but it was EARNED because of the high level of competition.
This #ESL saga isn't over.
Money is leading now. And that's why football will continue to plummet.
Unless someone brave steps up to make the selfless decisions.
