Employers - please read.

I had a second interview with a company that culminated in me having a serious meltdown. This could easily have been avoided.

#AutismAcceptanceMonth
Firstly, unlike other companies and organisations I've worked with, they made no reference to my disclosure of being #autistic and, therefore, disabled. No mention of reasonable adjustments to any of the process.

#AutismAcceptanceMonth
So no adjustments were made, and there was no sense that they were aware at any stage.

Last week they failed to inform me of what was actually required on the day, so after an embarrassing start to the interview it was rescheduled.

This is not good for #autistic people.
I then had the weekend to get more and more anxious about the rescheduled interview. Still no word on adjustments. I'll admit I didn't take the initiative, but then that's part of the disability.

Then I entered the interview, only to be rudely told I couldn't do it on my phone, that I'd need my desktop and headset. None of this had been mentioned beforehand. Bear in mind this had already been rescheduled and I was at my stress limit.

So I mumbled an apology and left the meeting, intending to log on on my desktop. But as I went downstairs I had a complete meltdown. Totally lost it, floods of frustrated tears and misery. Missed the rest of the interview. So that's a job opportunity gone

I'm posting all this publicly because employers *need to know*. Also I'm shameless, I don't care if I come across all flaky and such. Employers *need to know*.

So there you go. Great morning. /s

Please please please employers - take the lead on adjustments, ask the individual what they need and have some ideas in case they're too frozen or ashamed to offer any (unfair feelings of shame are understandable given the state of attitudes to disabled people atm)
And don't throw curve balls. Communicate. Ensure everything is clear beforehand. Don't mess with people.

Honestly I'm a bit of a mess after all that. God, employers, you've just got to do better than that. 😔
