Promise, this is my final #SuperLeague thread, after that back to real scholarly work.

A post-mortem analysis of an American dream that didn’t come true.
1. The #SuperLeague was driven by the idea that the American closed league model can simply be imported in the European context.
2. Like many American exports (such as peace in Irak or Afghanistan) it fails the test of context/local people. Culture, history, path dependence matter and people are simply not interchangeable.
3. The good news (if you believe the one percent has too much influence at FIFA & UEFA) is that a breakaway league is now more than ever an empty threat. We’ve seen the future and it’s not pretty for the mutineers.
4. We had it all backwards, the one percent need us (small clubs, fans, consumers), they cannot (no more than billionaires) walk alone and breakaway to Mars.
5. The Agnellis of this world have kindly demonstrated that they are naked kings, their power was based on fear only. Thank you for that!
6. What is to be done? UEFA cannot hide anymore behind the fake breakaway threat to justify its reforms of the #ChampionsLeague. It needs to finally reinforce solidarity and redistribution as was demanded by AG Lenz in his #Bosman opinion 25 years ago.
7. What is to be done? Fans must get organise and recognise that they have considerable political power in the football governance system, they can damage « brands » and demand that football be less about milking them financially.
8. What is to be done? Top players, who have declared their flame to sporting justice and economic solidarity, should put their money where there mouth is and support @FIFPRO in fighting for the 99% of professional players who are struggling to make ends meet.
9. What is to be done? Politicians, who have promptly express their outrage, should also take the longue durée responsibility of pushing (imposing) for much deeper governance reforms at UEFA and FIFA.
10. What is to be done? The « small » clubs should stop to beg for crumbles and see that they are key to the economic/social success of the 1%. Rebel, occupy ECA and fight for your damn interest!
11. Finally, this was a crazy ride, it felt like years passed by in two days and in some sense they did. Football will never be the same...
