#MomentsofBeauty in #Glasgow: I love how Sir JJ Burnet terminates University Gardens with a cheeky wee oriel bay keeking out between the chimney arch. But wait, what’s this I spy, a plaque to an event of World significance? What could it be? Closer, closer please...🧐👀! 1/2
The plaque commemorates a dinner party in the house during which Radiochemist Frederick Soddy, then a lecturer @UofGlasgow first explained the idea of an Isotope for which he won the 1921 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, but... there’s more to the story which the plaque omits🧐! 2/3
Namely while Soddy may have described his concept, the word ‘Isotope’ (Greek for ‘at the same place’) the nomenclature, was suggested by fellow guest, the equally interesting Dr Margaret Todd. So, as part of the interpretation shouldn’t she get a name check @UofGlasgow 🤷‍♂️? 3/3
