1/ thoughts on airtags, the physical trackers Apple released today to help you find personal items you might misplace.

Bottom line: Apple thought through many privacy scenarios, but not sure yet if they've thought through all. Possible I'm missing info, of course.
2/ the mind blowing part is: Apple is using deployed iPhones as transport network to relay airtag signals back to their owner.

It seems they're doing this responsibly, but wow, it's still a little weird to think my phone is being used to relay a signal for someone else's tag.
3/ that's the big principle question: is it okay to use people's iDevices for "the common good"? And if so, are there other things we should be using iPhones for?

Remember people were worried about opt-in exposure notifications...
4/ now, to privacy implementation questions. It seems they've thought through a number of issues. If someone uses their airtag to track someone else, target's iPhone will warn. In addition, if target is not using an iPhone, tag starts beeping if separated from owner for too long.
5/ this is pretty good.... But does it fully handle the abusive spouse problem? If someone surreptitiously tracks their spouse who's not using an iPhone, but who is physically in the same room as their abuser at least once a day.... Will any of the warnings actually trigger?
6/ also, apple says devices rotate Bluetooth ID regularly... But also iPhones can detect when the same unknown airtag is always with them... That seems contradictory? If an iPhone can tell that an airtag is hanging around for a while, can't it also track that airtag across time?
7/ this problem space feels very hard. The features you want map closely to possible misuses: small, light, long battery, track anywhere. Awesome when used for good, scary when used for bad.

Even though Apple has clearly done a lot of homework, I don't yet know if it's enough.
