Watched the boy camera footage of the Columbus shooting. Some thoughts: 1) First, Ma'Khia Bryant absolutely did not deserve to die. What happened is tragic and I grieve for her family and her community at the terrible loss of a young life. 1/n
2) The scene was chaotic and the responding officer saw the young woman with a knife charging at another individual. He is trained to protect the life of that other individual and his recourse was to fire his weapon at Bryant to neutralize her attack. 2/n
3) I can understand the outrage in the black community, especially on this emotionally charged day. They are angry and distraught over seeing another young member of their community killed. 3/n
4) I don't see this as good vs evil. I see this as a tough situation and a breakdown in communication between two communities that has roots in the unequal treatment of African-Americans in this country. There is a lot to talk about here. 4/n
5) What are the implications of having a police force that by and large is not invested in the neighborhoods they serve? I think this responding officer was trying to help, but were the department's policies in line with the community's needs and expectations? 5/n
6) How do you respond when someone is in position to cause great bodily harm and appears that they very may well commit an imminent assault? Do we really want police to wait for the other woman to be stabbed before responding? 6/n
7) Most of all, what if we start the dialogue with the assumption that the community members and the police officers are both acting in good faith, as there is so far no evidence to the contrary? Let's look for solutions, rather than retreat to anger and vitriol. 7/n
8) And let us pray. Most of all for the family of Ma'Khia Bryant who are suffering the most devastating and heartbreaking pain in human existence. May God bring them solace. 8/8
