any giddily negative review of anything usually sounds like masturbatory nonsense to me. and there are lots of things i think are bad and can talk about why i think that, but the self-satisfied, self-aggrandizing position people take is the most nauseatingly masturbatory thing

this is probably just a result of being on the internet too much and basically hearing every single person take that same self-satisfied position like constantly, and it honestly bothers me so much

and i have probably done this too at some point, and its probably part of the reason i lean away from talking about things i dont like as much as talking about things i do like or find interesting. theres just a lot more interesting stuff to be said about things we like

with some exceptions, i think most criticism of art should be able to be read by someone who likes that thing without feeling like its calling them a slack-jawed idiot

(this thread was obv inspired by seeing specific piece of criticism, but none of these tweets are specifically subtweeting anything, feel like i should put this warning on more threads lol)
