Finished my work day with an awesome mindfulness meditation and #cbt seminar.
Got me thinking about Melanie C’s empowering lyrics & how they flip the script on negative thinking (aka cognitive distortions in psychology)
#musicistherapy
Let me explain further in this thread 😄
#labelling - Who I Am
“I’m comfortable with what’s inside. You think you’ve known me all this time, but the real me is mine”
This song is all about owning who you truly are and not letting anyone or anything change how you feel about yourself.
#personalization - Blame It On Me
“Now I know you’re poison, can you hear the voices filled with paranoia”
This song’s got this witty, sarcastic tone about recognizing a toxic relationship & the negative voices in our head that have no right being there!
#allornothing - Good Enough
“if I leave you behind, I believe I will find something good enough”
I think this song is about letting go of perfectionism (internal or external forces) and embracing our personal qualities.
#overgeneralization - Escape
“Breaking down, breaking out from the thoughts, from the doubt”
So often, we let negative experiences dictate who we are and our fate. This song serves as a reminder that your past does not define your future. Carpe diem ✹
#shoulds - Overload
“I don’t want to be your acceptable version of me”
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking what we HAVE to do instead of what we truly WANT. This song is about speaking up when you’re feeling burnt out & pressured to meet other people’s expectations.
#disqualifythepositive - Fearless
“It ain’t a crime to be feeling yourself, no better time to excel, no better moment to rule your world”
This song is all about breaking down those negative comparisons we make about ourselves and embracing all of our strengths and opportunities.
#mentalfilter - Here I Am
“They said I was too old, that all the embers had turned cold, but I’m on fire”
This song is all about using a positive lens to find the strength in your weaknesses and resisting any internal or external voices putting you down!
#magnify - Nowhere to Run
“No mistaking, you’re overtaking, without me letting my guard down”
A dark song with a perfect metaphor for panic attacks and catastrophising. This song brings me comfort in knowing that these feelings are common and can be managed. “I gotta breathe out”
#emotionalreasoning - In and Out of Love
“We don’t have the time here to lose. By tomorrow I’ll be gone”
An apparent frivolous dance track, with a hidden meaning. Have fun on the dance floor but don’t fall in love too fast based on irrational (possibly inebriated) thoughts 😜
#jumpingtoconclusions - End of Everything
“Oh no I’m not scared, won’t let these eyes see red”
A beautiful ballad about finding solace in endings & new beginnings. Instead of getting fired up, Melanie talks about controlling her emotions & forging a new path for herself.
