If I had to give future heme/onc fellows one piece of advice not directly related to patient care, it'd be to read at 1+ paper every (week)day. Set aside 30 min to read something from NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, Blood, JCO, or any sub-journal. Save and highlight PDFs digitally.
Basic and translational science papers count, too, but that's more niche...
Looking back, I'm a better physician, better reader, better writer, and find more joy in my job in large part thanks to reading.
Lots of ideas and advancements will first happen outside of your particular areas of interest, so reading keeps you in-the-know.
And within your area of interest, knowing how we established the modern SOC is super valuable, and helps inform you what the next steps might be to improving our treatment strategies.
P.S. This is way easier to do after 1st year in many programs, as inpatient work decreases. But the more you try to do it when you're busy, the easier it is when you have more time on your hands.
