Unfortunately, we can’t tell you the results of the #DandelionUnion vote today. Yet.
Why?
Let’s learn a little bit about union elections process!
🧵
There are actually three outcomes after the first round of vote counting: Yes, no, and maybe.
Yes and No, pretty simple. If either gets more votes, they win.
But maybe?
In union elections, everyone who would be a part of the Bargaining Unit gets to vote. Going into the vote, there might be some jobs that are still in question. These are Challenged Votes.
In an election with Challenged Votes, those ballots are set aside, and not counted initially.
Yes or No then has to win by enough votes that if all of them were opened, it wouldn’t change the outcome.
Ex: 100 votes. 20 are challenged. Yes would have to get 61 votes to win, because if every one of those Challenges were opened and were No, Yes would still win.
What does this have to do with #UnionMadeChocolate? Well, Yes didn’t get enough votes in this first round to overcome if every one of our challenge votes was a No.
What happens now?
First, we will have a week for both the Union and Dandelion Management to make an initial case for why certain jobs should or shouldn’t be included.
If we all agree within a week, we open up the votes we all agreed should be included, and have a result.
If we don’t all agree, then we have to go to the NLRB for hearings to determine eligibility for those jobs. Only after that, can we open those votes.
So, this is obviously not the outcome anyone wanted! But there are two silver linings here:
First, so many Dandelions showed up to vote, and to vote in support of the union!
Second? We all get to learn a little more about the process of Unionizing! Thanks for learning along!
